Cumaru de Chiero (Huni Kuin)
Cumaru de Cheiro, or “Scent of Cumaru,” is a classic blend crafted in the Huni Kuin tradition—a lovely Rappé known for its versatility and gentle strength. While the Huni Kuin people create a wide variety of sacred snuffs using different recipes and ingredients, this particular blend stands out for its inclusion of Cumaru ash.
The fragrant Cumaru lends this Rappé a delicious flavour with gentle hints of vanilla. It creates a dreamy, transportive medicine carried on the notes of its rich perfume. This particular blend is made with finely powdered Cumaru bark and small amounts of the seed (also known as tonka bean), making it quite unique.
According to the knowledge of the medicine makers, it acts as a tonic for the heart, helps relieve asthma symptoms, and is a potent anti-inflammatory. It supports respiratory health and is used to address various other ailments.
In their language, the tree is known as Cumã—a powerful and sacred being. The Huni Kuin say, “Cumaru is a tree that does not rot, for it is very true.” They believe it possesses the wisdom of many enchantments, which carry through in the energy of the Rappé—bringing strength and truth. Her power is associated with spiritual protection and the ability to fight off negative energies. It is considered excellent for enhancing concentration and is said to reduce excess wetness in the body—though it can be very drying if used in excess.
